Adi Garia Mahashawshan
One of the oldest cremation grounds in Kolkata, Adi Garia Mahashawshan lies in the central-south of the city. It was the site for the adi-Ganga (the old path of the holy river Ganges which has since then shifted northwards). Hosting the ‘jora’ or twin temples, the cremation grounds also become a major attraction during Kali Puja (which usually falls on the same day as Diwali) where the cremation and temple grounds see one of largest celebrations in the city.
The twin temples, or 'Jora Mondir'
A plaque with the temple's history, and a relief depicting Krishna counseling Arjun on the battlefield in the epic, the Mahabharata. A strange contrast, given the temple is located in a region once better known for non-Brahmanic worship forms.
This enclosed pond is allegedly a portion of the AdiGanga that flowed right through this site.
