Sabarna Sangrahasala
The Sabarna Sangrahashala, located in Barisha, is housed within one of the Sabarna Raychaudhuri’s many properties. While the top floor of the house is still in use, the heritage museum is on its bottom floor. The Raychaudhuris are among the oldest families of Calcutta, and contest the story of its founding told by the Sovabazar Rajbari family, founded by Raja Nabakrishna Deb. Asserting that Job Charnock never founded Calcutta as an urban center, the Raychaudhuris claim that the villages that went on to make up Calcutta were already semi-urban, with established trade and transport, and look down on the property purchase made between Charnock and Nabakrishna Deb. In addition to intriguing oral history from a family member himself, you will also find rare artifacts inside, including the city’s founding bricks, old documents and letters written by poets, as well as coins and international artifacts. Every year, this family hosts an International History and Heritage Exhibition in February, which you might just be lucky enough to catch!
