Victoria Memorial
Probably the most iconic of modern Calcutta’s tourist spots, the Victoria Memorial was built in dedication to Queen Victoria. Now functioning as a museum of sorts, it houses many premodern gems from Bengal’s history. This includes a cannonball from the Battle of Plassey and also a trove of medieval and early modern swords and weapons used by nawabs in battle, in addition to cannons from the two World Wars. Many 18th century paintings line its walls, including one by famous Orientalist painter 'Thomas Daniell titled Hurdwar. When visiting, take your time with each artifact, and rest in the memorial’s palatial grounds to cool off.
