Fort William
Established as the first Company Factory in 1696, and then becoming the centre of the early British rule in India, Fort William lies at the heart of the city in Hastings. Its early modern significance is manifold, with it being the first fortifications of the East India Company, and also is the site of the Black Hole of Calcutta. Today it serves as Vijay Durg, the Eastern Command of the Indian Army. You cannot enter the fort on normal days; but drive past it to Victoria Memorial. On Vijay Diwas (16th December), a special entry is organised by the army.
